This is the third structure in the vicinity. The poorly designed, prefabricated hut was air-dropped onto the north side of Franz Josef Glacier in March, 1952, with the build completed in the summer of 1952-53 by 2 builders & local guides. In 1992, it was superficially upgraded, with a new toilet in 1995. A rescue plan by conservation architect Chris Cochrane, saw the hut sitting on a solid steel foundation by 2004. Still, the poorly flashed windows led to further moisture issues. Between February & May, 2024, the hut was extensively overhauled by a revolving team of 6 builders & 3 DOC rangers. The roof & cladding was removed & the entire building sheathed in structural ply. The roof structure rebuilt, rafters doubled up & the windows removed, repaired & properly flashed when reinstalled.
