This was the first of three 'Angelus' huts. It had 4-sacking bunks & was clad in tin, with ice forming on the inside of the building in winter. It was built by Eric Chittenden & Eric Peat of the Nelson Ski Club in the winter 1956 or 1957. Building supplies were wrapped in sacks & skillfully air-dropped onto frozen ‘Booths Lake’ (now Lake Angelus / Rotomaninitua) as it was called then, by members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, flying a Bristol Freighter. It was replaced in 1970 by the Dept. of Lands & Survey & the tin hut became the toilet block for the second generation Lake Angelus Hut. Edit Hut
