Built in 1961 by the NZFS, it is located 0.5km below (at-the-time), the nearby Canterbury Mountaineering Club (CMC) hut of the same name; until 1977/78 when the CMC hut burnt down. The NZFS hut was used by government hunters until 1972. The open fire was replaced by a wood burner at some point. Edit Hut

The Monkey fan section was dry and stifling hot when we visited. Take plenty of water for this section. The bush section directly before the hut has a vertical drop to navigate. Best to stay to the river bed if dry. Good water source and watch for the hut on your left.
