Built by the NZFS in 1960 as a S70 6-bunk design with an open fire, the materials were dropped in by fixed wing aircraft. The open fire was removed and replaced with a wood burner sometime later. The hut was painted rescue orange in 2014 & an open fire was reinstated in June, 2016. It is one of only two S70 type huts in the Tararua Forest Park that are fully representative of the deer culling huts built by the NZ Forest Service. It is now maintained by the ex NZFS group. Late March, 2025 saw the hut repainted. Edit Hut
Not an easy job to get there, you have to cross six streams and each of them is down in creek and it will really suck out your power. 4 km took me almost 3 hours.
