Built by the Abel Tasman National Park board as a 8-bunk hut in 1963, to replace the original 1909 built hut [see 'Balloon Hut (old)']. The 1963 built hut was extended into its current 14-bunk configuration in February, 1995, by the Waimea TC, including the addition of the large covered deck. It had gas heating at one point-in-time, but this was replaced by a wood-burner by the Waimea TC in 2016, in addition to a woodshed. In January, 2023, the hut was re-roofed. Edit Hut
