Built in Easter, 1945, by Canterbury Mountaineering Club members, Stan Murison, Fred Hulston & Nui Robins, with the assistance of almost 40 other club members, including Leslie White. The frame was prefabricated in Christchurch, broken down & railed to Cass, trucked to Klondyke Corner, pack-horsed to Carrington, & then man-hauled to the site. It is named in memory of Neville Barker, a club member killed during WW2. It was replaced by the current hut in 1978.
