Reportedly built in 1958 by Ray Osman for $80, upon instruction from Jock Fisher to build "something you can stand up in". It is built from the leftovers of Bob's Hut up the Matakitaki valley. Despite its awesome location, it & the track to it, have received little maintenance. Gold miners likely established the route up Burn Creek in the 1870s. Numerous blue plastic markers were fixed during COVID lockdown times to add to the sporadic white NZFS Permolat markers & old blazes remaining along the overgrown track. The section up Jacobs Ladder to get above some bluffs is reasonably well-marked.
Refurbished in February, 2024, by a team led by Roger Gaskell, including Martin Douglass, Mike Graham, Simon Field & Gerald Gaskell. Edit Hut
Very little sign of the old track up Burn Creek until the climb from the forks to the hut. Hut is pretty basic with dirt floor. But very glad to see it after 6.5 hrs from the Matakitaki River.
