Built by the NZFS in November, 1962, it was originally called 'Top Motueka Hut. It was washed away in a flash flood on 23 February, 1995, with the death of two DOC hunters, Russel Griebel & Bob Waldie. Hydrologist's information provided to DOC puts the time of the tragedy at approximately 5am. The nearby 'Hunters Hut' (see separate entry on this website) is a memorial to Russel & Bob, The concrete slab the hut used to sit on, is still there. Edit Hut
