Built in 1964 this was a collaboration between the NZFS, Canterbury Conservancy & NZDA, South Canterbury Branch. The former, led by field officer Lance Boyd, organised for all the material to be provided to the latter. Volunteers from the NZDA, led by Dare Midgley built the hut at Erewhon Station before it was flown-in by Ray Wilson (pilot for Helicopters NZ) where Alastair Midgley put it on site. Edit Hut
Bivvy No2 is definitely better than No1, which has a mid-height platform that prevents full use of the interior space. The window handle of Bivvy No2 is broken, which prevents it from closing tightly.
~1.5-2hr from the main river. Travel up Carney's stream is slow at times with a fair bit of boulder hopping; can be rough in the rain/when icy or slippery. Made it there no worries during winter - although there are a few places you wouldn't want to stop due to rockfall possibilities.
