The NZFS built Cattle Ridge Hut for deer control in 1960. The name reflects the presence of escaped cattle that were eventually culled in 1935. The hut had an open fire which got blown away & it was replaced by a wood burner, which was later removed. In March, 2017, DOC builders extensively renovated the hut & it is now completely revamped, insulated, double-glazed & extended in size. Before DOC relined the hut some graffiti from Noel Fraser & Co., who built the hut in the summer of 1960/61 was uncovered. In February, 2019, the hut interior was painted by volunteers from NZDA's Wellington branch. See also https://gwbn.org.nz/our-huts/cattle-ridge-hut/ Edit Hut
Derrick Field and GWBN are legends! Dundas Hut to Cattle Ridge used to be terrible and now it's practically a highway. Still a long way down and a long way up tho.
