Originally a tiny 3m x 1.5m shelter (to the left of the sliding door) built by the NZFS in the 1980s. The covered area was progressively enlarged by hunters with makeshift tarpaulins & by the 1990s had become another shanty shack. 1996 saw it 'closed-in' & a pot belly stove installed to replace the old drum fire. The upgrade was completed by Ray Phillips, John DeLury & Neville Miller, with Ray & John covering the costs. All subsequent work has been completed by volunteers from the Rakiura Hunter Camp Trust who own & maintained the hut. Cavalier Creek is named after the ketch Cavalier, which was wrecked there in 1901 on its way south to pick up people from the Muttonbird Islands. $30.00 per person (10 days max stay). Booking permit required. Edit Hut
