Built by the NZFS in 1959 as a standard S70 6-bunk design with an open fire. Its unusual name derives from reports that several dogs owned by deer cullers resident in the hut at that time, died from distemper. Edit Hut
Cute little orange ex-NZFS 6 bunker, sweet open fire with cooking cover, saw a rat and lots of spiders, hut a bit dirty around edges but overall was in nice enough condition, slightly dodgy track over Big Hill but river crossings were largely enjoyable, did the FMC hut clean here :)
Nice and tidy hut. No sign from the riverbed so be careful to not miss it. First section of track going to Herricks hut is following the riverbed. Ankles to knees deep at low flow. The track going up to the No Mans Rd is starting on the South branch of the river (not on the North branch as shown on NZTopo50). Good track is going up.
