Built in 1960 by the NZFS as a S81 4-bunk design with an open fire and an alcove outside the door. The open fire was later replaced with a wood burner. The hut was upgraded in 1993, with the assistance of members of the Central Hawke’s Bay Shooters Club. February, 2021, saw Joe Eagles & a team re-roof the hut, install a new wood burner, & build a standalone wood shed nearby. Edit Hut

Track up from Smith Steam has recently been cut and marked well. Still a very steep route though, with caution needed.
