Built by the NZFS in 1970 as a S70 6-bunk design for glacier research, this was the highest altitude S70 to be built. The standard open fire was of no use at this altitude & was modified into a cooking box. A lean-to was added onto the hut in 1972. It was extensively renovated by volunteers, led by Justin Venable in Feb, & Mar, 2017. They replaced the door, windows & removed the cooking box. The roofing iron new building paper was installed. They built some new inner walls, linings & repainted the hut. Justin & his team returned in April, 2019, to complete further strengthening of the joists & repair the lean-to's, water-damaged framing, they installed skirting to the doors, windows, walls & floor. They cut & installed a perspex cover for the old archival maps & added shelves & coat racks. Edit Hut
