Built by chief ranger, George Lyon, Bruce Postill & others in 1978 to replace the original 6-bunk hut, located 10 minutes up stream. The hut is named after Scottish born, Nelson College teacher & former president of the Nelson Tramping Club, John Tait (1901 -1982). He led a volunteer effort to raise funds to construct the original hut, which opened in 1951. This was five years before Nelson Lakes was gazetted to become a National Park. The new hut offers great views from the valley floor to Mt Travers & Mt Cupola. It was due to be removed in 2019 due to avalanche risk with a new 28-30 bunk hut built 4km downstream at the confluence of Hopeless Creek & the Travers River. Edit Hut
