Built over 1966 & 1967 by the Kapiti Branch of NZDA. In 2019, funded by the Backcountry Trust, branch members carried out a restoration of the hut. They added new windows, some exterior cladding, replaced the floor, new wall linings, a new meat safe & a new roof. See https://www.backcountrytrust.org.nz/projects-blog/kapakapanui-hut-restoration and https://gwbn.org.nz/our-huts/kapakapanui-hut. There is 1 bar of cellphone signal if you stand on the large log behind the toilet & a better signal 250m up the track at spot height 890m. Edit Hut
Generally clean inside, but quite a lot of junk outside the hut and in the alcove, took most of this with me (including a bunch of tin lids with only 1 tin). Also the mattresses were a bit odd, as they partly overlap when placed down on the bunks. Kinda seems like there needed to be an extra half a metre of bunk space for them to fit properly.
Otherwise, hut was cosy, well-maintained, and had a large emergency food supply.
