A letter from the Wildlife Branch to the Director-General of Lands & Survey in 1953, asked for a hut to be built in Takahe Valley because hunters & researchers were living out of a tent camp, which had to be regularly reinstated. The hut was built in 1954 under contract, by the Amphibious Airways Company Ltd of Invercargill who used a flying boat to transport the materials, landing on Lake Orbell. The hut is in the Murchison Mountains 'specially protected area'. It is used by DOC biodiversity staff & contractors. Access to the area is by permit only. Edit Hut
