Notes
Named after a young 1950’s deer culler who drowned. 1993 saw the hut relined by Ray Ferris & Jason Hart. Mid May, 2022, saw 6 volunteers, overhaul the hut. They built a freestanding woodshed, replaced the ceiling lining, building paper, barge flashings, ridge capping & roofing iron; removed the open fireplace, & replaced the hearth, fireproof surround, & chimney. In February, 2023, Cyclone Gabrielle undid all their hard work when an upstream hillside collapsed, blocking the river, which subsequently flooded the valley, leaving the hut teeterring. Early June, 2024, saw 6 folks, led by the BCT’s, Megan Dimozantos, prep the hut for shifting. They removed the verandah, wood burner, fire alcove & its concrete pad, closed the wall-in & braced the hut, ready for lifting by Kahu NZ. Edit Hut
