Built in 1957 by the NZFS as a B49 design, it is 1 of 3 remaining that were built. It has a perspex window & 2 sleeping benches that were likely retrofitted in the early 1970's. Designated for removal in DOC's 2004 review, but strong public opposition saw them backtrack. It was renovated in 2014 by a team of volunteers, who repainted it, repaired a hole in the floor, replaced the bottom plate, re-secured the door stud, braced a partially rotting bearer, replaced a purlin, braced 2 rafters for extra support, flashed the window, installed a new latch, & replaced the door hinges. There are no mattresses in the biv. Edit Hut
