The historic Lyell Hut was built by 3 members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club (CMC) over 3 months during winter 1931. During the Great Depression the members spent eight-weeks backpacking materials up the dried up valley from Washbourne Hut where the materials had been carried by dray from Manuka Point. Historic photos in the hut show vegetation has overtaken the site as in the 1930's there were good views of the Lyell Glacier in the valley head. It was replaced in late 2021 by members of the CMC.
