Originally called Mid Matiri Hut, it was built in September, 1958 by Ron Turner & co. Jock Fisher reports it was 1 of a group of 4, which were the first NZFS huts flown in by helicopter on 18 August, 1958. They were designed by the NZFS Nelson conservancy building overseer Phil McConchie, whom the hut was later renamed after. The huts were pre-cut at Golden Downs workshop, stacked at Karamea & flown in by the Christchurch-based Braziers Air Works in a Bell 47. The first three flown in were Luna, Karamea Bend & Kakapo. The helicopter then flew to Murchison & picked Phil up, as he supervised the erection of the first hut. Phil remained until the hut was completed & then walked out to Murchison with one of the hunters as a guide. It was NZFS hut #433. Edit Hut
