Built in 1964 by the NZFS as a S81 4-bunk design with an open fire. The louvre windows were replaced by single-glazed alluminium windows in 2002, & the open fire replaced with a potbelly stove. An extra bunk was added at some point. Edit Hut

The access track was overgrown in February 2025. On the way to the hut, there's a big slip before the first creek (the creek that starts close to pt1515) where slipping would have high consequences. Going around is not recommended as it's exposed, bluffy and crumbly. The access to the tops (easier than the track!) is from the end of the valley towards pt1668, picking up the best route as you go

Brilliant pot belly, plenty of wood around. Lots of light from three alloy windows.
