Built by the NZFS in the 1960's as a standard S70 6-bunk design with an open fire. It was lined & had one of the cupboards removed in the 1980's. The original open fire was replaced by a woodburner in the late 1990's. In 2004, DOC replaced the louvre windows with aluminium ones & repainted & resealed the hut. It was repainted again by volunteers in early 2018. Edit Hut
The Mikonui River is flat and wide and is easy enough to cross in normal flows. The 18 km gravel road to the carpark is more suited to 4WDs as you have to cross a few small streams which may be washed out. May have to forage for firewood. The hut is in reasonable condition.
