Built in 1962, the biv had not received any maintenance since the 1970's. In 2003, DOC designated it as 'minimal maintenance'. In 2004, DOC repiled it, replaced the bearers, & some of the joists, framing & floor. 2016 saw Bruce McClelland, an ex-NZFS culler & Chris Matheson replace the building paper, chicken wire & roof. Feb., 2023, saw Bruce, Dell Phillips, Graham Russell & Marty Bisdee replace the louvre window with double glazed one, replace the ridge capping, & replace rotten sections of the door frame. They installed tiedowns & painted the exterior walls & window frame. Water is from the closest tarn only. There is no toilet so do not crap around the biv as the water table is high & it could feed into the tarn used for drinking water. There's one thin mattress. Edit Hut
There are a few tarns around where you can get water. The route to the biv between the track from Styx River and the biv is vaguely marked with poles. The biv has only one bunk and one mattress, but one more person can fit on the floor.
