Built in 1962 by the NZFS as a standard B55 design, it had a corrugated iron roof, a single louvre window at the back end. The biv was re-piled & the bearers, joists, framing, & floor replaced by DOC in 2004. It was re-roofed by 2 volunteers in March, 2016, with the addition of an inner layer of chicken wire & roofing wrap to improve weatherproofing. In February, 2023, volunteers completed the renovation, replacing the louvre window with a double glazed one, replaced the lead ridge flashing with a non-toxic one, & replaced some rotten sections of the door frame. They installed tie-downs, & the exterior walls & window frames were painted. The biv has 1 mattress, which is a bit too big for either of the sleeping platforms. Edit Hut
There are a few tarns around where you can get water. The route to the biv between the track from Styx River and the biv is vaguely marked with poles. The biv has only one bunk and one mattress, but one more person can fit on the floor.
