The first of three Waihohonu Huts. It was built in 1904 by the Tourist & Health Resorts Department for park visitors & tourists travelling by coach from Waiouru or Tokaanu. It was actively used for over 60 years, finally closing in 1968. The hut was registered as a category one historic place by the Historic Places Trust in 1993. It was replaced by Waihohonu Hut No. 2 (28 bunks). B&W photos: National Library. Edit Hut
Love this old style hut it's been turned into a museum of sorts with info about it all on the walls, although the walls just look like tin they are actually insulated by pumice and concrete poured inside the walls, pretty cleaver!
