Built by Otamatapaio Station, which was originally part of the large Omarama Station, which ran from the Ahuriri River to the Otematapaio River. Many websites name the hut as 'Otematapaio Station Hut', which is true to an extent. This is the second hut to have been built in the upper valley by Otamatapaio Station, the first being 'Otamatapaio Station Hut (old) ('Pink Hut)', 2km down valley, hence, why the local owners, musterers & fencers, referred to it as ‘Pink Hut’. In 2005, DOC extensively renovated the hut interior, including full ply lining, new bunks, a stainless bench, a ply table, benches, & aluminium window frames. In 2006, DOC installed a wood burner. Access is via Backyards Rd. There's a carpark for 2WD vehicles up the road and you can drive a further 5km to the 4WD carpark near the footbridge over the Otamatapaio River. From here it's 10km further to the hut.
