The second of two Otehake huts in this vicinity. Built by the NZFS in 1963 as a S70 6-bunk design with an open fire. The current hut replaces the former IAD-built, 'Otehake Hut (old)'. Dave Richardson relates that he, Ray Forsyth & Harry Waters cleared a chopper pad downstream from the IAD hut, so materials could be brought in. Post building, a vestibule extension with a door was added. Between 2017-2018, Permolat volunteers completed extensive renovations, including painting. A new toilet was a recent addition. Volunteers also cut & marked the Otehake Gorge route & it is now follow-able from the Otehake hot pools to the hut. Edit Hut
The hut is in good condition in a nice spot on the river side. Only 20 entries in the intention book in 2024. There is a good access from the Taruahuna Pass (2.5h). There is a marked track on the TL of the gorgy section that make the travel easier.
