Notes
It is a NZFS SF70 designed hut, built in May, 1961, by G. Coombs & R. Osman of Reefton (according to the inscription on the interior cross beam). Although a six-bunk design, it only has only four bunks, with a gun rack & bench filling the space between the bunks. The hut has received extensive maintenance by both volunteers & DOC in the past 6 years, including window replacement & repairs, sealing of the chimney flashing, new fire surround, vegetation clearance, exterior painting, & replacement of lead-head nails. We put some markers across one slip but at other unmarked sections had to figure it out as we went and so couldn't put more markers up. People who do this trip need to carry cruise tape or some other form of marker.

Recent track damage including washouts, log jams and tree fall mean slower times. We are fit and took over 6 hours. Allow enough daylight!
