Notes
The fifth of five 'Pioneer' structures but fourth Pioneer Hut. The first structure (Pioneer Biv) was a corrugated iron biv erected by Alack & Cowan in 1933/34. The second structure (first hut) was short-lived, completed in Mar., 1953 but crushed by rocks in Jan., 1963, killing climber Gilbert Murray. The third structure (second hut) was built between 1963-1966 mostly by volunteers but this was replaced in 1984 by the fourth structure (third hut). Unexpected snow-loadings stressed the third hut (called 'The Fridge') & it was replaced in 1999 by this the fifth structure (fourth hut). This hut was a conjoint project between DOC, NZAC & NZ Army, led by Derek Chinn. Edit Hut
