Built in the 1970's, this was a former research hut belonging to the Marine Department, & used as a base for scientific research on oysters. It consisted of two spaces; one room was enclosed with a floor, some free standing bunk beds & a bench on one wall. The other room was an unlined garage storage space without a floor with access via a garage door & then a step up into the bunkroom. The Lands & Survey Department eventually took it over, converting it into a public hut. In 1984, the hut was dismantled & floated across the inlet on two 14-foot pontoons, set 4-5 metres apart, with timber lashed between them to form a deck. The pontoons were towed by a 12-foot Starcraft dinghy with a 15hp outboard-motor across the bay, where it is now a hunters hut. Edit Hut
