Notes
Relocated in 1983/84 by NZFS rangers Brian Maplesden & Robin Oliver. It was the former seldom-used 'Makaroro Hut', which was sited at the western end of Makaroro Road, 1km NW of the former 'Makaroro Base Camp'. It replaced the 'Puketoi Musterers Hut' situated 100 metres east, which burnt down. DOC had designated 'Poutaki Hut' as 'minimal maintenance' due to the "low hut visitation rates & being off the beaten track", adding, "if it falls into disrepair, it will be removed & not replaced". Dec., 2021, & Jan., 2022, saw the hut rebuilt by 5 volunteers, including a new floor, building wrap, roof, flashings, cladding, linings, aluminium windows, woodshed, tank stand & tank, guttering, wood burner & chimney, & deck subfloor & decking. Wow! That's brilliant to hear and see that Poutaki Hut has received the love and attention it very much deserved! Well done to those involved!
