Notes
The first of four Powell huts, it's named after Ian Powell, a founding member of the Hutt Valley Tramping Club (HVTC). Powell Hut No. 1 was built by the HVTC in 1939, officially opening on 14 May, 1939 in the presence of 120 people. It was demolished in March, 1981, to make way for Powell Hut No. 2. The second version was destroyed by fire on 17 May, 1999, & replaced with Powell Hut No. 3. The third version was subsequently replaced in 2018. Reputedly, Powell Hut No. 1 was haunted by Cedric Wilson, a hunter who disappeared on Mitre in 1945. Edit Hut
