Built by the NZFS in the 1960's an a standard S81 4-bunk design with an open fire, which was replaced with a woodburner early on. It was repainted, resealed & had some minor repairs done by DOC in 2003/04. Mid January, 2025, saw a BCT team of 4, tidy up the hut, replacing the roof & wood shed, & they repainted the huts interior & exterior. An overgrown track leads to the crossing upstream on the true left of the Hokitika, but it's rough, though followable. There's no track downstream of the crossing but it's easy to just thread a route through the vegetation to the Hokitika River. A swing bridge no longer exists upstream across Rapid Creek. Edit Hut
From the DoC website:
20 February 2020: Rapid Creek swingbridge closed
Rapid Creek swingbridge is closed and must not be used due to serious erosion undermining it’s foundations. Travel up or down the Whitcombe Valley will now involve crossing Rapid Creek.
