Built in 1976 by Alistair Bradley & Snow Meyers. Some materials were salvaged from the Kennott mining site buildings at Questa Creek. Some were flown in from Moteuka or the Cobb Ridge. Alistair & Snow managed to build today's hut from these bits & pieces. They lived in a tent while building the hut on the current-day heli-pad. Apparently there's a complete bundle of new roofing iron at the bottom of the Karamea River as the load was accidentally dropped when a strop snapped underneath the chopper making a drop at the hut site. The photo with the red door & chimney at rear was taken in 1991. The hut was renovated, including an extension of the porch in 2020 by Bill Barnett & co. Dec., 2022 saw the hut painted. Edit Hut
Excellent setting looking up the Beautiful River. Getting there is a mission. Either via Kakapo Ridge from the Cobb or a low Karamea River with 18 river crossings, including twice swimming across the river. Or bush bash down the true right bank to avoid any river crossings, but would be more time-consuming than rock hopping.
