Built in 1908 from timber brought in by pack horse. In 1924 it was extended with a kitchen & bathroom added at the rear, & a porch on the front. The latter was demolished in 1950, when it was bought by the NZFS & it was used as the chief forest ranger base. In 1978, it was renamed after legendary Morrie Robson, who lived here with his wife Coral, from 1952 until Morrie's death in 1966. After Morrie's passing, it has been used by school groups. The hut used to have a diesel generator for heating, lighting & hot water.
