Built in 1957 by Dave Tiller & Jock Fisher, with all the materials airdropped by Cessna aircraft with wing racks. Jock flew with the pilot to ensure the loads were dropped on the site he had chosen. It was 1 of 4, NZFS B48 designed huts (predecessor to the SF81). It originally had flat-iron cladding on both the walls & roof, with the latter replaced by corrugated iron in the 1960's. In 1983, the NZFS overhauled the hut, removing the fireplace & installing a wood burner, & replacing some of the piles & framing. In 2003/4, DOC repainted & sealed the hut. In 2015, Permolat volunteers replaced 11 of the 15 piles & the roof & an end wall were repainted. The extensive regrowth around the hut was cut back. The hut & associated tracks are maintained by Permolat volunteers. Edit Hut
Has a bath but needs the plug put in when it's raining. Can light a fire under the bath. Using ashes from the woodstove is an efficient way to establish a fire there. Needs the vegetation cleared to enable this.
