Notes
This was the second of four 'Smith' structures in the area. It was originally a Wellington Tramping & Mountaineering Club hut. Building beginning in April, 1948 & the hut opened in Feb., 1949, in front of 110 people. It coexisted with 'Smith Creek Hut No. 1' for 7 years. By 1964 the hut was dilapidated & it was demolished in 1965 as the nearby 'Tauherenikau Hut No. 2' (built by members of the Tararua Tramping Club in 1958) was far more welcoming. 'Smith Creek Hut No. 2' was the predecessor to 'Smith Creek Shelter No. 3', built in 1965. Edit Hut
