Built c1962. As of June, 2022, the track up on the terrace is now fully cut through the broom. If you go up there, please pull some broom seedlings. Extensive amounts of broom that surrounded the hut have been cleared & the track was cut by volunteers, led by Richard Janssen, between Labour weekend, 2018, & Queens Birthday, 2022. It has wire netting for the bunks. Edit Hut
From the Waiau River, I went up the Edwards River. The first section is gorgy, but the trip is manageable at low flow (maximum knee-deep). The 400m of track leading to the hut, as described on the NZ Route website, is very overgrown and difficult to follow (and you’ll need to love thistles). The bivvy is really well-maintained and has a small pool in the river just 30 meters upstream.
The NZRoute website track info is now out of date. The new cut track starts after the first 90 degree turn in the stream and just before the second 90 degree turn.
As of January, 2025, the track from Charlies Saddle down to the river has overgrown and no longer exists. Also the first 1km up Stony Stream is a mix of broom bashing and river travel, the cut track on the terrace is also getting overgrown.
A good alternative route we found to Stony Stream from Scotties Hut is the gorge section of the Edwards river but river needs to be running low and clear.
The cut track starts at the bottom of Charlies Saddle on the Waiau river side, furtherest away from Scotties hut. Go down the 4WD track, where it turns north, go straight ahead 50 metres and look left/south for track start.
There is no track from the top of Charlies Saddle, only the steep 4WD track to the high point.
