Built on 22 & 23 November, 1975, by NZFS's Bob Norton, Bill Logan, John Croawell & Urewera NP ranger, Arthur Taylor. Nigel Robinson, NZFS hunter, helped with the final construction. All 3900 lbs of materials were flown in by a Bell 47A chopper from Maungapohatu. Edit Hut

Note: Both tracks to this hut are overgrown (to Makakoere hut or Mangatoatoa hut) but the tracks are doable. In most places marking is still OK (even on steep sections to Makakoere). Prepare for a longer trip time, limited marking in places and some scrub bashing.
