The original biv [see 'Veil Bivouac (old)'] was built in 1964 & removed by DOC in November, 2012, as the river eroded the bank to within 2 metres. New foundations were laid by volunteers in March, 2016, on a high terrace across the river from the old site. The refurbished biv was reinstated by volunteers in December, 2017. Many thanks to Hugh van Noorden, David Keen & members of NZDA South Canterbury branch. The site of the biv before removal was NZTM E1412052 N5193794. Edit Hut
Great spot. Allow 3-4 hours from Curtis Memorial (or more in poor conditions). I followed the TL of the Havelock, which seemed to minimise river crossings, but Veil + Fan streams will need to be crossed (and can easily rise with rain/snow melt). The climb up the moraine wall is obvious, and the start is cairned.
