Notes
It was built in 1968 & the Dexion cladding is unusual in Te Urewera. The tracks from the Whakatane River to 'Saddle Hut (Mangaawai Hut)', 'Twain (Waipotiki) Hut' & this hut are very overgrown. A GPS is advisable & be prepared for slow travel times. Removed under the direction of Te Uru Taumatua, in late 2022 as part of their hut removal programme. Edit Hut

The hut was referred to as 'Y/Kok' in the day book entries by the deer cullers of the day. I arrived after a trip over from the Mangahoanga forks where there was a hut up the spur called 'Potters wheel', named after the headman Murray Potter, then I continued to Twain, Saddle (mangaawai) and Casino

Yep when I visited as part of a longer trip round the northern Urewera in the 80s I found the mattresses all tunnelled into and blood from sick rats in the foam. Wonder if they're the same mattresses
