The site began life as a temporary camp built in 1966 to accommodate the first NZFS goat culling teams in the Remutaka Range. Later, NZFS Ranger Joe Hansen & culler, John McCann, built the hut & in May, 1990, they added the veranda, deck & steps. Brent Castle has progressively tidied the hut up, recently repainting it in NZFS orange. Edit Hut
Nice and tidy hut. 1h30 from carpark. 15 to 20 rivers crossing on slippery rocks. Ankle deep when I was there but can be higher after rain. The track is little bit overgrown by section but not too bad. The first 500m is in the riverbed, then after that follow the big triangle to find where to enter the track. It seems to have a campground at the carpark.
