Built by the NZ Postal Service in the 1960's, the hut started its life as the former telecommunications exchange building for the Manapouri Power Project, where it was located on Percy Saddle Road. In January, 1988, upon completion of the power project, the hut was moved to West Arm & converted into a 6-bunk hut for recreational use (see 'West Arm Hut No. 2'). February, 2007, saw the hut relocated, 1km west to this, its third site, just of the Wilmot Pass Rd, where a new toilet was built & the asbestos roof replaced. It is one of the only buildings at West Arm from the power station construction period & it retains much of its original outward appearance (DOC Southland Around the South newsletter #198 April 11, 2007).
