It has 12 bunks and the category of Standard Hut.On 17 Mar. 1886, the crew of the government steamer Hinemoa, built the castaway depot from a kauri kitset to aid shipwreck survivors. NZ ceased depot provisioning in 1929. In 1969, University of Canterbury expedition members re-roofed the depot, fitted a door & windows, replaced removed architraves, built doorsteps, & painted the door & window. In Nov. 1978, detailed drawings & significant restoration of the depot took place during the NZ Wildlife Service expedition, with the partly prefabricated BAAS Hut (Bounty, Antipodes, Auckland & Snares expedition) built at Hut Cove as a research base, with building led by John Newton (Dept of Lands & Survey). 1985 saw both huts painted & in 1998, the castaway depot was re-piled. In 2011, the BAAS hut was repainted & re-roofed. In early Jan. 2014, a major landslip struck the BAAS Hut, pushing it 20m & compromising its structural integrity. It was repaired, including new piles, where it stood in Nov. 2014. In 2016, the BAAS Hut was extended, when it became the main operational hub for the Million Dollar Mouse eradication project.
