The second of four Ball huts, # 2 was built in 1926 by the Mt Cook Company, & was gradually added to during its life. It originally measuring 20' x 40' (6m x 12m) & contained 2 bunkrooms (12 bunks each), separated by a dining room. The growth of skiing saw bunkrooms added in 1931 to the south end, making it 60-bunks. In 1933, a large two-story extension was added to the north end, making it over 100-bunks. The hut included a shop, guides room, committee room & kitchen with a coal range & large ovens. Post WWII, the Tourist Department built a larger kitchen with an oil range, indoor washroom, large water-tank & diesel lighting plant. It was destroyed by fire in Nov., 1977. Edit Hut
