Managed by the Strath Taieri Agriculture & Rural Tourism (START), it was built in 1946 by the Otago Ski Club as a 70-bunk ski lodge. Winds of over 180 km/hr have been recorded on the site. The hut was brilliantly restored in the early 2000’s by volunteers, led by Bruce Mason. Edit Hut
Cosy wee kitchen. Candles verboten. Bank acct # is 06 0939 0096156 000 if you want to donate or prepay for a stay. There were instructions on harvesting water but we chipped icicles off the tor between the hut and the dunnies and melted that for water. Dunnies are being replaced very soon. Both were filled with spindrift when we arrived.
Small groups are not required to book this hut. There’s obviously an issue with fire safety, having restored the exterior of the hut, the Trust don’t want it to burn down. Groups of ten or more do need to book. $12 each to stay and you can pay either at the hut in an envelope in cash, or via bank deposit. Has ping pong table, and a great illustrated history on the wall.
