First known as 'Hannah Creek Hut' before taking on the Chaffey name from the nearby stream. Jack McBurney was a Forest Service Ranger based at The Cobb Dam & a good friend of Ed Hillary. Jack McBurney & Jack Cowie, built the hut over two years; 1952-1953. Unfortunately, it wasn't maintained after 1994, almost becoming derelict. The hut was designated for removal in DOC's 2004 review, but strong public opposition saw them pull out. The Golden Bay Deer Stalkers Association members raised funds & manpower to fully restore the hut in 2012, with the restoration overseen by John Taylor & John Mason. Edit Hut
