Built in 1962 by the NZFS as a standard S70 6-bunk design with an open fire. The hut is operated by the Greater Wellington Regional Council. Although it is said to be for emergency use only, the 6 bunks & pot belly stove are pretty inviting. If you have any infectious diseases you are recommended not to go here as it is where Wellington gets it water from. The original open fire was replaced with a woodburner which sits inside the chimney cavity, & the hut has been recently repainted. Edit Hut
The hut has had a major tidy up, new fire box, fully repainted inside with new bunks made up, very nice hut, I came in and out via the spur behind the hut upto the Marchant track, steep but no Leatherwood:-)
