Notes
Measuring 6.1m x 3.6m, the hut was built in 1961 by members of the Gisborne Canoe & Tramping Club as a shelter for climbers. It was officially opened in November, 1961. Club members hauled building materials with the aid of pack horses from Pakihiroa Station (220m a.s.l) to the hut site (1067m a.s.l). Access is over Pakihiroa Station & the hut is now administered by Ngati Porou. Mount Hikurangi is reportedly the first place in mainland NZ to see the sun rise. Edit Hut
