Notes
Built to plan by chief guide Peter Graham & guides Jim Murphy & Darby Thompson. In 1909 materials were carried by horse & humans 9 miles up valley. Glacial retreat eroded the moraine wall on which the hut sat & it was moved back in 1948. In 1963 it was moved 40m further back onto new foundations. Access became problematic in 1994 when Stewart Gut was deeply incised & the hut was moved 70m back. In 2005 the hut was hit by an avalanche & DOC removed it in 2015. As of late 2020 it has been restored & is back in the valley. Refer to 'Hooker Hut (2021)'. Edit Hut
